How to Create Your Own Birthstone Engagement Ring
If you want to design a breathtaking engagement ring, try creating a customized birthstone ring. A piece of jewelry you've designed and set yourself will be an heirloom to treasure for generations to come. With loose gemstones, a purchased setting and some jeweler's tools, you can create an engagement ring at home.

1
Hold the ring with the prongs upright while using tweezers to place the stone in the setting. Make sure it is resting level in the setting.
-
2
Open your gem setting pliers, and place the notched jaw on the first prong to tighten it. Rest the other notched jaw lengthwise against the opposite prong. Use this prong for stability as you close the pliers and tighten the first prong against the stone.

3
Turn the ring and repeat, flattening the second prong against the stone. Continue tightening the prongs in this way, always working in opposite pairs for the best result.
-
4
Check the prongs for scratches made by your pliers. Use a jeweler's file to gently buff them out, avoiding touching the stone, as some birthstones are softer and can be scratched.

Tips & Warnings
Choose a ring setting that fits your style and budget. Simple styles, such as a basic solitaire or a swirl setting, are available for single stones. Look for a semi-mount setting if you want diamonds or other smaller side stones; these kinds of settings come with mounted accent stones but no center stone. Other ring settings include cocktail settings for large stones or unique settings for one or more stones such as flower and starburst designs.
The more prongs the setting has, the more secure your birthstone will be.
