How to Get a Job With a Temp Agency
Being unemployed is challenging for many people as they struggle to pay bills without receiving income other than unemployment checks. While it can take several months for a person to find another job to replace the one they lost, a great source of employment during the interim is a job with a temp agency. Most communities across the U.S. have at least one temporary employment agency that places workers in short-term jobs at local businesses that are short-staffed, or in need of a substitute or replacement. All a person needs to know to take advantage of this is how to get a job with a temp agency.

1
Learn about temp agencies in your community. Check to see if national and international temp agencies such as Manpower, Kelly Services or the Specialists Group are located in your community. Contact the local unemployment or workforce service office in your community to learn what local or regional temp agencies exist. Find out if any of the temp agencies work specifically with one industry.

2
Submit an application. Gather the dates of previous employment as well as contact information for your references and previous supervisors. Go online to complete an application for the temp agency through their website, or visit them in person and complete a paper application. Read over the application before submitting it to ensure you have all phone numbers, addresses and dates of employment correct.

3
Take any required tests. Temp agencies give prospective employees tests to gauge their skills and abilities rather than simply relying on a person's word. For example, employees with interest in temporary office positions take typing, spreadsheet and computer proficiency tests. Performing well on the tests increases your job opportunities and pay through the temp agency since you will qualify for more positions, some of which will offer a higher wage.
-
4
Interview. Meet with a representative of the temp agency to interview just as you would for a traditional job. Discuss your work experience and what skills you can offer companies and businesses that utilize the services of the temp agency. Be truthful when answering questions since temp agencies check information from the application and interview with your references and previous employers to verify its accuracy.
-
5
Review temp jobs. Speak with your representative to find out what jobs are currently available through the temp agency. Most temp representatives have a job in mind for you based on your skills and the needs of the company. Find out specifically what tasks you would be responsible for doing as well as the duration and pay rate for the job. Inform the temp agency representative if you have reservations about the job or the company prior to taking the position. This allows them to find a different position for you, which might be a better fit.

6
Be a good employee. Once you find a job through a temp agency, it's important that you show up on time and to the right location for your assignment. Work hard and inform the representative of the temp agency of any problems you may have at the temp position since you technically work for the temp agency and not the company where you are temporarily stationed. When the temp position is over, contact the temp agency to learn about additional temp jobs for which you may qualify.
