How to Hang Birdhouses
A birdhouse helps to protect birds from the effects of harsh climate, such as snow, rain and hail. These shelters for birds also allow you a chance to view birds from your own backyard as they rest. Once you have bought or built a birdhouse, you will want to find a place to put it that will give birds easy access to it. By hanging the birdhouse on a tree, you can provide a more natural setting for the shelter and entice more birds to visit it.

1
Find a sturdy tree branch attached to a healthy tree. You will not want the birdhouse to break if the tree branch falls down, so find a branch that can hold the weight of your birdhouse. Also, try to find a tree that stands away from human activity to attract more birds to use it.

2
Drill holes into your birdhouse in particular spots. If you have a relatively lightweight house, you can drill two holes at the center of the top of the birdhouse, drilling one hole at the right side of the top and one hole at the left side. This works well with cylinder-shaped birdhouses where most of the weight is at the top of the birdhouse. For rectangular-shaped birdhouses, you will want to drill two holes through the birdhouse--one through the front side of the birdhouse and one through the backside.

3
Cut the wire, chain or rope to support the birdhouse's weight. You don't want the birdhouse to hang too low to the ground, so keep that in mind when deciding the length.
-
4
Use your cut piece of sturdy wire, chain or rope and pull it through the holes you drilled. If the wire, chain or rope won't fit because it is too thick, you can always drill into the birdhouse to make the hole bigger. Make sure that the cord adequately supports the weight of the birdhouse by holding either end of the cord and seeing whether the house stays steady.

5
Hammer in your chain, wire or rope into the tree. Take the end of one side of the wire or chain and hammer a nail through it so that it becomes attached to the tree. Restring the birdhouse by pulling the chain, rope or wire through the holes again. Take the remaining side of the chain, wire or rope and hammer it into the tree as well.

Tips & Warnings
Hang the birdhouse as high as six to 10 feet off of the ground to prevent predators from attacking the birds.
You can use this same process to hang the birdhouse from a ledge, instead. Just make sure the ledge can hold the weight of the birdhouse.
