How to Be a Good Preschool Sunday School Teacher

Working with preschoolers can be a challenge, especially to someone who does not have experience or education in that particular area. If you have volunteered to teach Sunday School and you find yourself surrounded by a group of preschoolers every Sunday morning, you may feel somewhat overwhelmed. However, there are a variety of things you can do to ensure that your Sunday School class sessions proceed smoothly and reach every child.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the lessons yourself beforehand. Don't plan on being able to read from notes during your Sunday morning lessons. Read over the lesson topic, Bible story or verses early in the week so you can become familiar with them by Sunday morning. When you teach the lesson to your students, share it with them like you're telling them a favorite story instead of instructing them on a boring subject. If you do not know your lessons in and out, then your teaching will not flow smoothly and you may lose the preschoolers' interest.

Incorporate movement into the lesson. Try to find a way for the children to play a game, sing a song or do a dance during the class time. Preschoolers cannot sit still for more than approximately 10 minutes at one time, so you should try to let them move around periodically during your lesson, even if it is only to move from the carpet for circle time to the table for a craft project.

Make your lesson interactive. Preschoolers do not respond well to a lecture format, but they love to participate. Ask the children to help you turn pages when you read a book, hold pictures for you while you tell a story and pass out craft supplies and snacks. This will help each child feel like he is a part of the class and an important helper to you.

Be patient. Understand that preschoolers are rowdy sometimes, and some of them may have little or no experience with the organized structure of a classroom. Sometimes they will exhibit negative behaviors, and other times they will make you laugh. Every day is a new adventure when you work with preschoolers, so just be sure to remember to be patient with them as they grow in their faith.
