How to Change the Automatic Response to Read Receipts in Outlook Express

In the business world, read receipts are frequently used when email messages are sent. A read receipt tells the recipient's email software that the sender would like a confirmation to be sent when the message has been read. If you frequently receive messages with read receipts, you may have Outlook Express configured to send read receipts automatically. In some situations, however, it may be more prudent to decide yourself when a read receipt is sent. Change the automatic response feature in Outlook Express if you prefer to have receipts sent manually or not at all.

      Launch Outlook Express. Click on "Tools," then click "Options."

      Click the "Receipts" tab.

      Click a radio button to specify how you would like Outlook Express to handle read receipts. If Outlook Express currently responds automatically to read receipts, "Always send a read receipt" will be selected. Select "Never send a read receipt" or "Notify me for each read receipt request" to change this setting.
