How to Boil Eggs in Salt

Boiled eggs are wonderful snacks. They have only 70 calories and are an excellent source of protein. There are many different ways to boil eggs, and different people swear on different methods. One of the methods to cook the perfect boiled egg is to use salt to help the water boil quicker. This method is excellent to use if you want to make a soft boiled egg, because the quick temperature increase will cook the outside of the egg much quicker than the yolk. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Medium to large saucepan
  • Water

      Let the eggs sit outside of the refrigerator until they are room temperature.

      Put the eggs into a medium to large saucepan (depending on how many eggs you want to boil). Cover the eggs with 1 to 2 inches of water.

      Add a teaspoon of salt to the water and eggs. Place the pan over a stove and bring the water to a full boil.

      Remove the eggs from the heat and let sit covered for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes is up, pour some water out of the pan and replace with plenty of cold water to stop the cooking process.

    This is a fine method to cook hard boiled eggs. But the explanation is wrong on two counts. 1) Addition of salt will not make the water boil quicker; it will raise the boiling point of the water. So, the water will take longer to boil, but it will be at a higher temperature. 2) This amount of salt will have almost NO effect on the boiling point of water. If you omit the salt from the water, it still takes only the 10 minutes to cook the eggs.
