1
Open the box of multicolored lights and make sure the strand is completely untangled. Plug in the strand of lights where you plan to plug them in once the tree is decorated. By plugging them in before you decorate, you will be able to take the extra pull into account so that the tree's lights look relaxed and not pulled too tight.

2
Starting from the bottom, slowly work your way around the tree in an upward spiral motion. This will require you to gather the strand of lights in an organized way and walk around the entire perimeter of the tree.

Continue to spiral upward, letting the strand of multicolored lights remain slightly loose. When you get to the top of the tree, tuck the end of the strand into the tree. The end will be easily accessible when you mount your star or angel on top of the tree and it needs to be plugged into the strand of lights.

Use your hands to adjust the multicolored lights as necessary, using the slack you left behind while hanging them. Make sure the lights are equally spaced and the colors are evenly distributed.
