How to Save a BMP As a JPG

There are plenty of programs one can purchase or download that will convert picture file formats. Fortunately, when changing a BMP (Bitmap) image to a JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), one can simply use the software included with any version of Windows. Microsoft Paint allows you to open BMP files, as well as save them in different file formats, including JPG. BMP files are large, uncompressed photo files use exclusively with Microsoft products. JPG files tend to take up much less space.

      Open the BMP file in Microsoft Paint. The program should open BMP files by default; however, if it does not, you can right-click the file and choose "Open With>Paint."

      Review the photo and re-size it or make changes if desired. You can re-size a BMP in Microsoft Paint by clicking "Image>Resize/Skew." Adjust the horizontal and vertical size of BMP image.

      Click on "File" and choose "Save As." Select "Save As Type" and choose "JPG." Select a location to save the file to and click "Save."
