How to Sprout an Avocado Plant

Sprouted avocado plants are an inexpensive way to add variety to an indoor garden and an attractive outdoor plant for USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. Once your sprouted avocado is planted, you'll want to keep the plant in a sunny location and water it periodically. The Garden Helper recommends misting your avocado plant with a spray bottle if you live in a dry climate. If you're expecting your sprouted avocado to bear fruit, be prepared to wait. The California Avocado Commission warns that home-grown avocado trees take 7 to 15 years to produce fruit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your avocado in half and remove the pit. Wash the avocado pit in water.

    • 2

Place one to two toothpicks halfway down the side of the avocado pit, poking them into the flesh of the pit. It may take a few tries, but you should be able to pierce the pit with the toothpick. Inspect your avocado pit, turning it so the wider side faces down and the narrow side faces up. The narrower side is the top of the avocado pit.

    • 3

Fill a glass with water and place the avocado pit over the glass. The toothpicks will help rest the pit above the glass. The bottom quarter of the avocado pit should be submerged in water. Place the glass with the avocado pit in a partly sunny location and leave alone to germinate.

    • 4

Top off the water level in the glass as needed, so that the bottom quarter of the pit remains submerged. Change the water altogether every two weeks. You'll notice the avocado pit begin to crack after two to three weeks. In another three to four weeks, roots and stems will begin to grow from the bottom and top of the avocado pit.

    • 5

Leave the avocado seed in the water, continuing to change water as necessary, until the roots are two to three inches long.

    • 6

Fill a container with potting soil. Place your sprouted avocado so that one-third of the avocado pit is above ground but the rest of the pit and the roots are buried. Water the avocado plant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all avocado seeds will sprout, so try to sprout several at the same time to ensure success.

  • Keep your plant in a warm room, between 60 to 85 degrees F.
