How to Check the Spelling in Outlook Express

To prevent sending email messages with spelling errors, many email servers have a spell check program. Outlook Express can be set up to automatically check messages for spelling errors before they are sent, or you can manually start the spell check process before sending a message. The spell check option and dictionary can be customized as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Tools" tab in the Outlook Express program. From the drop-down list that appears, select "Options."

    • 2

Click the "Spelling" tab in the window that appears. Check the box that says "Always check spelling before sending."

    • 3

      Click "OK."

    • 4

To spell check individual messages only, compose a message and click the "Tools" tab at the top of the "New Message" window. Click "Spelling" from the drop-down list that appears, or simply hit the "F7" key before sending your message. This will check the message you just composed for spelling errors.

Tips & Warnings

  • From the "Spelling" tab in the Options menu, you can customize the spell check settings of Outlook Express. The program can suggest replacements for misspelled words and ignore certain word formats.

  • You can add words such as unusually spelled names to the dictionary in Outlook Express.

  • Spell check in Outlook Express works only if you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, as Outlook Express borrows the spell checking function from Microsoft Word.
