How to Build Texas Horseshoes
The game of Texas Horseshoes, also known as washers or Hillbilly Horseshoes, do not require actual horseshoes, which can be difficult to obtain, but they do require a more complicated board than the typical Horseshoes game. Texas Horseshoes are based on a 3-foot board with three 6-inch holes through which the washers are tossed to score points. Building your own set of Texas Horseshoe boards will require only basic carpentry equipment and two to three hours of work.
Things You'll Need
- For one board:
- 3/8 inch plywood board (36 inches by 18 inches)
- 2 2-by-4s (36 inches long)
- 2 2-by-4s (15 inches long)
- Drill
- 2-inch screws
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Jigsaw
Instructions

1
Form the 2-by-4s into a rectangle with the two 36-inch boards forming one set of opposite sides and the two 15-inch boards forming the other set. Attach them by screwing through the 36-inch boards into the 2-by-4 face of the smaller boards.
-
2
Lay the plywood sheet on top of the frame, center it carefully and secure it with screws.

-
3
Mark the center point of each 18-inch edge and then draw a line that connects them. Along this line, mark points at 8 inches, 18 inches and 28 inches from the end of the board.
-
4
Measure and trace 6-inch circles centered at each of these points (3-inch radii).
-
5
Use the jigsaw to cut out the circles, making steady, even cuts.
