How to Transfer to a Private High School
There are many reasons why someone might want to transfer to a private school. Safety, academic rigor, religion and even prestige are all reasons why individuals may choose to attend a private school rather than a public one. You won't be alone in your decision if this is what you choose to do. According to the Council for American Private Education, 11 percent of all students in the United States attend private school. Transferring to a private school is not complicated; however, you'll need to meet the criteria set by the private school before making the change.

1
Find out what the entrance requirements are for the private school you want to attend. Some private schools may only accept students who have met certain criteria, such as obtaining high scores on standardized tests. If you know that you meet the entrance criteria, you won't be wasting your time filling out what can be very lengthy applications.

Meet with your current school counselor and get a copy of your transcript. Ask the counselor to explain anything you don't understand about your transcript. You'll need to know exactly how many credits you currently have and how many credits you will need to graduate. Make sure that the private school will not require you to take more courses to graduate than you would need to take at your current school. You can find out what the graduation requirements are at the private school you want to transfer to by speaking to a counselor there.

Apply to the private school you want to attend. You may want to apply to more than one in case you do not get into your original choice. Most private schools accept applications in the early spring, so you will need to plan well in advance. Also find out what standardized tests are required, as they may only be given at certain times of the year.

4
Withdraw from your current school. Go to the administrative offices with a parent and tell the administrator that you intend to withdraw. You will need to pay library fines, return books and take care of any other obligations that you may have before the school will release your transcript.

5
Register at the private school you have been accepted to. Take your transcript with you when you are registering. A parent should also accompany you.
