How to Teach Elementary Children Their Home Address

Parents should begin teaching children their physical addresses as early as they can. Children need to understand that they can give their address to a police officer or teacher in the event of an emergency. The child may become lost or need to call 911 if something happened to mom or dad. Help can come much quicker if the child has his address memorized. Teaching an elementary school child an address and reviewing it isn't difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a tune to a song that your child knows. This could be something as simple as "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

    • 2

Replace the words to the song with your address. For example, you may sing "555, 555, 555 Sycamore Lane" instead of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

    • 3

Repeat the song several times and then have your child join in. Take a break and sing the song again a few hours later. After a few days of this, your child should have their address down pat.

    • 4

Choose a piece construction paper that is the same color as your house. Now that your child can sing his address, you want him to be able to write it out if need be.

    • 5

Cut the construction paper so that it is in the shape of your house.

    • 6

Write out your address on the construction paper with a marker.

    • 7

Make another construction paper house for your child. Have your child sing the song as he writes his address inside the construction paper house. Do this once each day until your child can write his address without help.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once your child learns his address, move on to memorizing your phone number.

  • Take some time to teach your child about safety. Give a few examples of when she would need to use her address and phone number. Otherwise she may not know what to do if something were to happen.
