How to Check Grammar in Open Office
Open Office is a popular and free productivity suite for Windows users, and is a top alternative to Microsoft Office. Open Office Writer is the word processor application to be used within the Open Office suite of productivity programs. Unlike its Microsoft Office counterpart, Open Office Writer does not come equipped with a grammar checker. However, "Extensions" are readily available for download on their web site, and can be quickly and easily installed for immediate use within your Open Office Writer program.

Update your Open Office software to the most recent version if you have not already done so. Go to OpenOffice.org's Extension repository on the organization's web site and search for a grammar checker. There are quite a few to choose from; find one that is most suitable for your needs and will best optimize your experience. Lightproof Grammar Checker is a popular choice.

Download the zip folder containing your grammar checker extension to a location where you can easily find it; your Desktop is a good location. After the download is complete, open the zip folder and drag the Open Office Extension file(s) (.oxt) onto the Desktop.

Start up the Open Office Writer program. On the menu bar, select Extension Manager from the Tools drop down menu. Once the Extension Manger is open, press Add at the bottom. A window will pop up to allow you to locate the Open Office Extension files on your computer you have just downloaded. A status window will indicate when installation is complete and the newly downloaded Extension should appear among the others listed in your Extension Manager.

Close the Extension Manager. You should now notice blue squiggly lines underneath grammatically incorrect sentences and phrases. You may have to try closing and reopening Open Office Writer if you do not immediately notice the grammar checker working.
