How to Make Liquid Soap From a Bar

How to Make Liquid Soap From a Bar thumbnail
Melt down bar soap to make your own liquid hand soap.

If you want to recycle the tiny soap slivers in the bottom of your soap dish, or if you're simply wanting to create your own liquid soap, it's easier than you think it is. It's also more cost effective than purchasing liquid soap, because bar soaps tend to be more inexpensive. So don't toss those unused pieces of soap. Keep them until you have a substantial enough amount to recycle them into something useful.

Things You'll Need

  • Bar soap or soap slivers
  • Grater

Instructions

    • 1

Grate the soap bar if you are using a whole bar. If you are using small soap slivers, they should be fine as they are.

    • 2

Put the soap into the measuring cup with the same amount of water. If you have 6 oz. of soap, for instance, you'll need to add 6 oz. of water.

    • 3

Fill the pot with water to the halfway point and place it on the burner. Turn up the heat to medium, allowing the water to heat but not boil.

    • 4

Place the measuring cup inside of the water to create a double boiler and allow the soap to melt slowly.

    • 5

Remove the mixture from heat once it is melted and stir it.

    • 6

Allow soap to cool for 10-15 minutes, then pour it into a pump dispenser.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add 10-12 drops of scented essential oil to your soap to customize the fragrance.

I added 91% rubbing alcohol to mine and it has kept for over a year and I am still using it.
