How to Create an Icon on the iPhone

Save

Creating an icon for your iPhone application is a simple and fun project that allows you to show off your creativity to the world. The first thing people notice about your application is the icon. As a result, it should be something that catches the attention of your potential customers and makes them want to download your product. While creating it may seem like a difficult process, it is actually quite simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Graphic design program
  • Xcode iPhone development program
  • Create the visual aspect of your icon using any type of graphic design program that you can find. Once the image has been completed to your liking, save the icon as a PNG file. Open up the XCode program and drag the file into the "Resources" folder.

  • Copy the files current location into the project's (your application's) directory when you are directed to do so by the pop-up window that will surface after the file is added to the "Resource" folder. You will see a folder marked "Add to targets" in the middle of your screen. Open the file and make sure that your icon is saved there and click "Add" to make it a permanent part of the program.

  • Select "info.plist" from the "Resources" folder and find the file marked "Icon." Change the name of this field to the name that you selected for your icon so that the file reads "iconname.png." Save the changes and exit out of the program. This process tells the application that the file you saved for your icon will serve as the icon for the application once it is downloaded to an iPhone.
