How to Print Dialog Boxes

When a dialog box appears on your screen, such as a warning or error message, you may want to print it to reference at a later time. Unfortunately, there is not a print option on a dialog box. However, there is a way that you can print the dialog box by using the "print screen" button on the keyboard. The "print screen" button will make a screenshot that you can then paste into an image program, such as Paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "print screen" or "print scr" button on the keyboard when a dialog box appears that you want to print.

    • 2

Click the "Start" button and then go to "Programs" or "All Programs," depending on the version of Windows that you are using.

    • 3

Go to the "Accessories" program group and then select the "Paint" option.

    • 4

Click "Edit" from the drop-down menu and then select "Paste" to put the image of the dialog box in the Paint program.

    • 5

Click the small square on the left to use the selection tool and draw a box around the dialog box.

    • 6

From the "Edit" drop-down menu, select "Cut."

    • 7

From the "File" drop-down menu, select "New." Click the "No" button when the "save changes" dialog box appears.

    • 8

Select "Paste" from the "Edit" drop-down menu.

    • 9

Click the "File" drop-down again and select "Print" to print the image of the dialog box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pressing the ALT + Print Screen button will capture only the dialog box and not the rest of the screen.

  • If you are using dual monitors, the print screen will be an image from both monitors.
