How to Measure Wall Studs
Wall studs are the 2x framing members that fit between the top and the bottom plates of a wall. They are cut the same length when building a new structure on a level platform. Walls studs in basements may have different lengths because of irregularities in the concrete. The process of measuring wall studs is the same whether your floor is uneven or level. Measure the thickness of the top and bottom plate. The bottom plate may be thicker than the top plate if it is made of treated lumber. The water content causes the lumber to swell.

Measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling. For new construction, the plans include the total wall height.

Subtract the thickness of the top and bottom plates from the floor to ceiling height. This is your stud measurement. Exterior walls incorporate a double top plate. Remember to deduct an additional 1 1/2 inch from the stud length for these walls. If you are building a wall in a basement, subtract 1/4 inch or more from the studs to allow room to raise the wall. Fill the gap between the top plate and the ceiling with wood shims before attaching it.
