How to Recharge Automotive AC Systems
Throughout the life of your vehicle, the air conditioner needs be recharged with refrigerant. If you notice your vehicle's air conditioner begins to blow warm air or take an excessively long time to cool your vehicle, it may be time to recharge the system. A local mechanic can recharge your system, but to save time and money you can purchase a can of R134a refrigerant at a local auto parts store and recharge your air conditioner yourself.

1
Allow your vehicle to cool down for at least 20 minutes before beginning any work under the hood; this will prevent any potential burns.
-
2
Find the service fittings on your vehicle's air-conditioning unit. The low-side fitting is located on the suction hose that runs from the accumulator to the compressor. The high-side fitting is located on the hose that connects the compressor and the condenser. If needed, refer to your owner's manual for exact locations.

Attach the recharge hose to the valve on the can of R134a. Instructions are printed on the side of the can if needed. Twist the valve to the "On" position--this will puncture the top of the can and release a small bit of coolant and air. Close the valve to prevent loss of extra refrigerant.
-
4
Connect the recharge hose on the R134a to the low-side fitting while holding the can upright.
-
5
Start up the engine of your vehicle and set the air conditioner to "High." Twist open the valve on the can of R134a to allow vapor to begin flowing into the air conditioning unit. As the unit charges, check the inside of the vehicle to feel the air getting cooler.
-
6
Continue to charge the air conditioning until the entire can of R134a is empty. Twist the valve on the refrigerant to "Off" and shut off the vehicle engine. Disconnect the can from the low-side fitting. Close the hood of your vehicle.
