How to Make a Cat Cage Hammock

If your cat is confined to a cat cage while you're away from home, make it warm and inviting. Plush beds, blankets to cuddle and cat cage hammocks make the cat's temporary environment cozy. Hanging a cat hammock in a wire cat cage is a resourceful use of unused air space above upper cage shelves or at the very top of the cage. Cloth hammocks become washable swinging beds perfect for cat naps, lounging and hiding.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the cat cage. Use a tape measure to determine the width and length of the cat cage. Stand above the cage and measure from the exterior.

    • 2

Choose a washable fabric to make the hammock. Fleece, cotton or an old towel are warm, durable and inexpensive. Cut the fabric. Make one dimension one and half times the width of the cage. For example, if the cage width measures 16 inches, cut the fabric 24 inches wide.

    • 3

Cut the opposite dimension of fabric as wide as you have space. For a ceiling-mounted cat hammock, cut the fabric one and a half times the length of the cage. This allows the hammock to sag, creating room for the cat.

    • 4

Attach hook-and-loop fasteners to all four edges of the fabric. Lay the fabric flat on a table. Cut enough 1-inch-long pieces of fasteners to match the length of each side of the fabric. Apply several 1-inch long pieces of self-adhesive strips of 1-inch-wide hook-and-loop fasteners to the fabric edge. Space them approximately 1 inch apart. Use a sewing machine to secure the line of fasteners.

    • 5

Turn the fabric hammock over. Apply the opposite pieces of hook-and-loop fasteners to the backside of the fabric. Measure 2 inches in, and begin spacing 1-inch pieces of fasteners on the fabric so they correspond with the fasteners on the front side. Use a sewing machine to secure the fasteners.

    • 6

Place the hammock in the cat cage, near the top, above the uppermost shelf. Hold the fabric with one hand. Thread the fabric though the bars with your other hand. Wrap the fabric onto itself, and secure with the opposite piece of hook-and-loop fastener. Repeat this step for all four sides, allowing the fabric to sag so the cat can enter the hammock at the corners.
