1
Pick out dinner plates that are large enough for the main courses you usually serve. If you have a family with healthy appetites, don't skimp on the size of the dinner plates.
-
2
Find salad plates that match your dinner plates. These are usually 4 to 8 inches in diameter. Without salad plates, you would have to serve your salads on regular dinner plates, taking up too much space at the table.

3
Decide if you want bread and butter plates. These are a bit smaller than salad plates, but not by much. Salad plates can easily be used for the same purpose.
-
4
Choose bowls that are a size you prefer. Some bowls are quite deep, while others are wider and not so deep. You may even want to consider buying both, with the deeper bowls for cereal and the wider bowls for soup and ice cream.
-
5
Look for any additional items that might be useful when you are hosting people at your place. Something like a cream dispenser might not be used every day, but it could come in handy when you're having a gathering.
-
6
Remember the size of your table when you are deciding on dinnerware sizes. You might prefer really big plates and giant serving dishes, but if your table is small, those items are only going to make eating uncomfortable.
