How to Remove a Line From a Footnote in Word 2007

Microsoft Word automatically creates a separator line when users insert footnotes into a document. This separator line is designed to separate the footnote from the document's text. Sometimes when users delete a footnote, this separator line may remain, creating a visual distraction in the document's style. Users may also want to remove this line to keep the page uniform with the rest of the document's pages. This method can also be used to remove the separator lines from endnotes.

Instructions

1. Open the document in MS Word and navigate to the page that contains the separator line that you want to remove.

2. Click the "View" tab on the menu ribbon and choose "Draft."

3. Click the "References" tab on the menu ribbon. Select "Show Notes" in the Footnotes section. The footnote box will open at the bottom of the screen. If you have endnotes in the document, the endnote box will open. If you have both footnotes and endnotes in the document, a pop-up box will appear letting you pick which type of note to edit.

4. Select "Footnote Separator" from the pull-down menu if you are editing a footnote. If you are editing an endnote, select "Endnote Separator"

5. Click on the separator line that you want to remove. Hit the "Backspace" key. The separator line will disappear.

6. Close out the box by clicking on the "X." Click "View" on the menu ribbon and select your normal document view. The separator line has now been permanently removed.
