How to Repair a Metal Gutter
Although gutters do a great job of collecting water and redistributing it to another area, the constant exposure to water does take its toll on the metal. Gutters are made of different materials such as steel and aluminum, but the way you repair them is the same. The majority of gutters can be repaired fairly easily. If you can't repair the damage yourself, it probably means the damage has become so severe the gutter needs to be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove all dirt, debris and rust from around the hole with a soft brush and metal brush. Cut out the edges of the hole with sheet metal shears, if they are rusted. Dry up any water in the area with rags.
-
2
Sand around the hole with sandpaper until the metal is smooth. Remove all debris from the sanding with a brush.
-
-
3
Apply a rust-prevention product around the area of the hole. Spread the product outwards liberally. Allow the area to dry.
-
4
Patch small holes or leaking seams with plastic roofing cement. Make sure the cement extends out at least 3 inches from the hole. Plastic roof cement shrinks.
-
5
Cut a replacement patch with sheet metal shears that is made of the same metal as your existing gutter. The patch should extend at least 1 inch out from the hole in every direction.
-
6
Drill pilot holes through the patch and the gutter.
-
7
Apply the plastic roofing cement around the hole and onto the underside of the patch.
-
8
Place the replacement patch over the hole and onto the roof cement.
-
9
Secure the patch to the gutter with pop rivets.
-
10
Add a coat of plastic roof cement over the patch.
