How to Calibrate a Digital Humidor Meter
Digital humidor meters are also known as hygrometers. A hygrometer is placed inside the humidor, which is a cedar-lined box to store cigars. The hygrometer measures the amount of humidity inside the box. This measurement is important. Cigars should be stored in an environment with a relative humidity of about 72 percent. Before using a new hygrometer, it should be calibrated to give you the most accurate readings.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 cup of table salt
- 1/4 cup of distilled water
- Digital hygrometer
- Plastic storage container
Instructions

1
Pour 1/4 cup of distilled water and 1/2 cup of table salt into a small container or bowl. The container should be able to fit inside a plastic storage container with the lid secured.
-
2
Place the container or bowl with the salt and water mixture into the center of the plastic storage container.
-
-
3
Place the digital hygrometer in the plastic storage container next to the bowl of saltwater. Position the hygrometer as close as possible the to saltwater for an accurate reading. Place the lid on the container securely.
-
4
Leave the container for at least eight hours at room temperature to allow it to reach a relative humidity of 75 percent.
-
5
Open the lid and immediately read the hygrometer. If the reading is 75 percent, the hygrometer is properly calibrated. If the reading is not 75 percent, adjust the meter following the manufacturer's recommendations. For example, if the meter reads 70 percent, adjust the meter five percent upward to calibrate.

Tips & Warnings
If the hygrometer does not allow for adustment, simply note the reading at the time when the lid was removed. Add or subtract as necessary to acheive 75 percent for future readings.
