How to Find House Prices Online
If you have ever driven past a house with a "For Sale" sign on the front lawn and wondered what its listed price was, your first step might be to do a search on the Internet. According to the National Association of Realtors, in 2008, 60 percent of homebuyers used MLS websites such as nwrealestate.com, 48 percent searched Realtor.com, 46 percent accessed a real estate company website such as coldwellbanker.com, while 43 percent used an agent's homepage to search listings. Finding a home price online is a simple process. Here's how you can do it.

Finding Home Prices on the Internet
-
1
Log on to the Internet and access a website with current home listings. Realtor.com is the official site of the National Association of Realtors and lists homes nationwide. Zillow.com is another popular site used by buyers to search home prices and gather additional information, such as statistics on homes recently sold. Coldwellbanker.com is a company with U.S. and global affiliates that provides home prices. To find a local real estate company's site, type in your location on any search site and several options should appear.

2
Enter as much information as possible to locate the desired home and price on the website. Do you know the address of the property? Addresses are usually the quickest method of determining the current price. If you don't know the address, try entering zip codes, neighborhoods, street names or price ranges to help narrow down your search and locate the desired home and its price.

3
Locate the county website where sales are recorded to find the price of a home that has recently sold. Once a sale is closed, or finalized, it will be recorded as public information. Enter the home's address to find out the tax assessed value, sale price, taxes paid and physical characteristics of the home.

4
Contact a local Realtor if you still can't locate the price of the desired house online. An agent who knows the market will be able to pinpoint the home you are describing fairly quickly and provide you with the price without obligation. Email a local agent if you prefer to continue working online and they should respond to you promptly. If you have privacy concerns, many company sites will allow you to send an anonymous email to an agent.

Tips & Warnings
Many websites will allow you to place a home on your watch list to receive automatic notifications of its status, such as if it has an accepted offer, the price is reduced or it closes.
If the home price you are seeking is a FSBO, or "For Sale by Owner" property, searching online may be slightly more challenging. Many homeowners create websites or pay to list their homes on the MLS through independent brokerages, so you may need to call the telephone number on the sign in front of the home to get the information.
