Recreational vehicles, or RVs, are vehicles that contain amenities normally found in a home, such as a bed, kitchen and bathroom, and can be used as a mobile living space. RVs tend be large and wide and therefore it takes a lot of energy to make them move. This means that RVs tend to get very low gas mileage, which can make driving an RV over long distances very expensive. If you are planning on taking a trip with an RV, there is a simple way to calculate your gas mileage over the course of the trip.
Things You'll Need
Fill the RV with gas until the pump stops filling the tank before leaving on your trip.
Write down the mileage on your odometer after you fill up. Alternatively you can reset the trip odometer to keep track of miles driven.
Drive to your destination.
When you arrive at your destination or are forced to stop for gas, fill your tank back to full and take note of the number of gallons you buy on the gas pump.
Check your odometer reading and subtract the previous odometer reading that you recorded. Alternatively, if you set your trip odometer in Step 2, use the number on the trip odometer for Step 6.
Divide the result by the number of gallons of gas you purchased. This will be your gas mileage between your two fill ups. You can record the new odometer reading or reset the trip odometer again to make a new calculation at your next fill up.
Tips & Warnings
- Some RVs run on diesel engines, which tend to get better gas mileage than engines that use standard gasoline.
- Driving habits and the amount of weight inside the RV (passengers, cargo, and so on) can have a significant impact on gas mileage.
