How to Mount Window Air Conditioners
The summer seems to be getting hotter and hotter each year. This can cause discomfort within the home -- and when you see the high utility bills. Central air conditioning, in most cases, will not be an affordable option as the installation will call for a lot of expensive ductwork and construction through the floor or ceiling for vents. Installing a window unit can help provide less expensive relief. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open the window. Mark the placement for the window sill-mounted support brackets with a marker so that brackets are attached to each side and in the bottom center of the windowsill (the number of brackets you'll attach depends on the unit). Install the support brackets according to the instructions in the package to ensure that the unit does not slip from the window because of improper bracket placement.
-
2
Push the window open as far as possible so that you can put in the air conditioner. Lift the air conditioner unit over the support brackets and slide the window unit through the opening until it is flush against the window sill and you've heard a clicking sound that lets you know the unit is locked in place.

3
Pull the window down on the air conditioner before pulling the extensions out on both sides. Close the gaps between the unit and the sides of the window by fastening the air conditioner to the window sash securely, using screws and a drill.
-
4
Secure the window sashes on the unit together, using the brackets provided with the machine. Level the AC unit with the center screw. View the unit also to make sure that it is at a position to drain properly.
-
5
Seal in the window unit from the inside using the foam strip provided or with weatherstripping to prevent air from coming in or out. Plug the unit into the electrical receptacle and test the unit to be sure it functions according to manufacturer's specifications. Seal the outside area around the window with caulk for small openings and with clear masking tape for larger areas.
