How to Convert a USB to a Line-In Jack

The line-in port on your computer allows you to connect a microphone or other outside audio source. However, most computers only have a single line-in jack. If you need multiple audio devices connected to your computer, you must add additional line-in jacks to the computer. To do this, you can convert one of your USB ports into a line-in jack.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • USB-to-line-in adapter
  • Driver installation CD
  • Purchase a USB-to-line-in adapter from an online retailer or computer products store.

  • Plug the USB-to-line-in jack adapter into an available USB port on the computer. The adapter typically also has a line-out jack for speakers.

  • Inset the driver installation CD provided with your adapter into the CD drive of the computer.

  • Accept the license agreement and follow the brief set of prompts to complete the driver installation. Leave the prompts as the default settings.

  • Connect a microphone or any other audio device to the line-in port on the adapter.
