How to Delete Sent Messages in Outlook Express

Working in Microsoft Outlook Express affords a user many different options for sending and receiving emails. Deleting email messages will keep your mail folders clear of extraneous messages you no longer need. If you wish to delete sent messages in Outlook Express, you can easily perform this process by following the same process for deleting any message. You have the option of simply moving the message from the Sent Items folder to the Deleted Items folder or deleting the message completely from the system.

  • Open Outlook Express and click the Sent Items folder to open it.

  • Navigate through the folder to find the sent messages you wish to delete. Highlight one message by clicking it. If you wish to highlight more than one message, highlight one message and then hold the “Ctrl” key while you highlight additional messages. You can highlight any number of messages at one time using this method. If you wish to highlight all of your sent messages, click the Edit tab and choose “Select All.”

  • Click “Delete” from the toolbar. The icon for this button is an “X.” This process moves the sent messages you selected to the Deleted Items folder--you have not completely deleted those emails yet.

  • Delete the messages from your Deleted Items folder by right-clicking this folder and selecting “Empty Folder.” If you wish to delete only certain messages from within the Deleted Items folder, highlight one or more messages (using the same technique from step 2) and click the “Delete” button. Click “Yes” to confirm you wish to delete the message(s) permanently.

Tips & Warnings

  • To delete messages permanently from the Sent Items folder, highlight the message(s) and hold down the “Shift” key while you press the “Delete” key. Confirm that you wish to delete these messages permanently by clicking “Yes.” The messages delete completely without going into the Deleted Items folder first.
