How to Store Propane Cylinder Tanks

Save

Propane cylinder tanks can be easy and safe to use, but it’s also important to know how to properly store the tanks since they contain extremely flammable liquid. It’s important to keep the tanks at a safe distance from any everyday hazards or flames. Before storing the tanks, you should know the parts of the tank and how to use them. You should also know how to examine the pressure gauge and how to make sure the safety relief valve is pointed away from the level of liquid.

  • Find a well-ventilated area outdoors to store your propane cylinder tank. The area can be a patio or concrete spot that isn’t near any automobiles or traffic. Make sure the area is not near any source of flame or heat because the heat builds up pressure inside the tank, which may cause the pressure relief valve to release the fuel.

  • Set the tank on a flat concrete surface if you want the tank to be sitting upright. Make sure there are no flammable materials right next to the tank and make sure a large amount of water won’t fall onto the tank from rainfall or a gutter.

  • Position the tank so the relief valve is within the vapor space of the tank area. If you store the tank upright, then this will be accomplished; but if you store the tank on its side, then you run a higher risk of propane fuel leaking.

  • Inspect your tank weekly to make sure the liquid is above the level of the relief valve, and check for any area of the tank that might be leaking. You can also examine the pressure gauge as necessary.

  • Contact your propane dealer or any special programs in your area to find out where you should dispose of any empty or damaged tanks. Never use or keep damaged tanks near other tanks with propane fuel in them.
