How to Measure Collar Size on a Men's Shirt

Before purchasing a dress, formal or casual men's shirt, make sure you know the man's collar size. This will ensure that the shirt feels comfortable to wear and fits properly. To learn the man's collar size, you must first carefully measure the man's neck with a standard tape measure.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Paper
• Pencil

Instructions

1. Wrap the tape measure snugly around the largest part of the man's neck.

2. Slip two fingers between the neck and the tape measure and hold them flat against the man's neck.

3. Note the measurement and round it up to the nearest 1/2 inch to determine the collar size needed for a dress or formal shirt.

4. Use these equivalents to determine sizing for casual shirts: Purchase an extra-small shirt for neck measurements less than 14 inches; a small shirt for 14 or 14 1/2 inches; medium shirt for 15 or 15 1/2 inches; large shirt for 16 or 16 1/2 inches; extra-large shirt for 17 or 17 1/2 inches; and an extra-extra-large shirt for 18 or 18 1/2 inches.
