How to Determine Crimson Clover Seed Maturity

Crimson clover, one of the most popular winter crop covers, produces striking red florets housing tiny seeds. Each flower contains about 100 little florets producing thousands of seeds per plant. These flowers can be picked to harvest the seeds, but you will need to know when they are mature. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate from the planting date. Since Crimson clover seeds ripen about 30 days after being pollinated, you can determine their approximate maturation time. When the plants blossom, you can assume that pollination is underway or soon will be.

    • 2

Notice when flowers start wilting or changing color. As their bright red color is easy to spot, notice when the red fades and turns brown. Cut them carefully being careful not to shake out too many seeds.

    • 3

Feel the flowers. As they mature they lose their softness and become rough and bristly. As the flower continues to dry, the seeds are maturing. Pick the flower when it starts to feel prickly and let it dry for a week. This will give the seed coat time to harden.
