How to Read GED Test Results

If you are not a high-school graduate, your GED scores may be important when you are applying to colleges or universities. Understanding your GED test results will give you a better understanding of subjects that you are strong in and subjects where you are weak. The GED, also known as General Educational Development, is based on five tests that are taken over 7 1/2 hours. It covers science, reading, social studies, math and writing. Scoring is standard across the states, although there may be slight differences. The American Council on Education has regulated the standard process of scoring.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand the testing average needed to pass. GED students must score an average of 450 points on the five tests to pass. This means you can score low in one area and higher in another subject. However, you must receive a score of at least 410 in each subject. Individual test scores can range from 200 to 800 points.

    • 2

Look at each subject to determine whether you scored more than 410 points. If you scored more than 410 points, most likely you passed.

    • 3

Research the essay scoring portion of the test. This score is based on grammar, sentence structure, punctuality and how adept you are at using the English language. The writing portion is part two of the language arts section. As with other sections, a score of at least 410 is required to pass.

    • 4

Determine your rank among the other test takers. Not only will you receive points based on how well you performed, but your score also will be compared with those of other test takers, from 1 percent to 99 percent. If you scored a 60 percent on the science portion of the GED, for example, you scored higher than 60 percent of others tested.

    • 5

View your final score. To pass the GED, you need a total score of 2,250 or more. This total score will tell you immediately whether you passed the test.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fifty percent of people who take the GED the first time do not pass. This is often because the student did not study or did not properly study the subjects on the test. Use free online practice tests and buy test books from bookstores such as Barnes & Noble or Borders to make sure you are ready for the test.
