How to Make Ruby Red Slippers With Glitter
Dorothy's red ruby slippers are one of the most memorable items from The Wizard of Oz. It is possible to purchase replicas of the original but it is more interesting to make your own slippers. Some versions of these shoes have been made with sequins, but glitter is less labor-intensive. Use these ruby red shoes to complete a Dorothy outfit for Halloween or incorporate them with your regular wardrobe.
Things You'll Need

1
Purchase a pair of fabric shoes for the project. They do not have to be red shoes because the red glitter will provide the color. Stuff the shoes with newspaper to protect the interior.
-
2
Prepare your work area. Choose a well-ventilated room or work outside. Protect your work surface with newspapers.
-
-
3
Pour the glitter into a bowl for easy access.
-
4
Spray adhesive on one side of one shoe. Cover the area with as much glitter as possible while the adhesive is wet. Repeat this until both shoes are covered with red glitter.
-
5
Allow the shoes to dry for about 20 minutes.
-
6
Check the shoes when they are dry to make sure every spot is covered. If there are bare spots, spray more glue and sprinkle more glitter.
-
7
Seal the glitter with spray sealant. According to Marty Stevens-Heebner in "Altered Shoes: A Step-By-Step Guide To Making Your Footwear Fabulous," sealant used on shoes will make them water resistant, prevent paint from chipping, keep the shoes from tearing and give them a glossy appearance. Apply the first coat, wait for it to dry completely, and then apply a second coat.
