How to Clean Contacts on a Canon Camera

Occasionally, photographers using a Canon digital SLR will see an "Error 99" message flashing on their camera. This message prevents the camera from operating. An Error 99 can be the result of many things, including an inadequate connection between the battery and the battery contacts inside the camera body, but more often than not, Error 99 is caused by the contacts on the camera body and on the lens not communicating properly. While this sounds like a horrific problem, it is actually easy to fix.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil with eraser
  • Camera cleaning swabs
  • Eclipse cleaning solution.

Power down the camera and remove the battery.

    • 2

Remove the lens from the camera body and set it aside.

    • 4

Rub the eraser on the contacts on the lens.

    • 5

Reseat the lens in the camera and put the battery back in, then power on the camera. Check for the "Error 99" message.
