An SKU, also known as stock-keeping unit, helps to keep track of store inventory and organizing products. Through an SKU, employees will know the amount of individual products sold or are remaining in stock. When a salesperson uses a machine to read the SKU number, it immediately identifies the item.

Locating the SKU Number

An SKU number usually is listed below the name of a product in fine print. Before the number, you may see the letters SKU or Product ID. For example, a clothing item may have an SKU number on the back or the side. On an appliance, you may find the SKU number printed on the bottom of the box of an item. Some SKU numbers may even appear above a bar code on an item.
