Instructions

    • 1

Sterilize a glass bowl to hold your ingredients. Interference from foreign germs in your yeast culture could kill the yeast bacteria or slow the growth. Wash it thoroughly and then let it boil in hot water for 20 minutes. Cautiously remove it from the boiling water using tongs. Do not use the bowl until it is completely cool. Trying to start the yeast in a hot bowl may hinder the yeast production.

    • 2

Fill the glass bowl with 2 cups of warm water, 1 tbsp. of sugar and 2 cups of flower. Mix the ingredients thoroughly for the best results. Cover the ingredients with a sheet of cheese wax paper to hold in carbon dioxide, which helps form yeast in your mixture. Leave the mixture in a warm location (between 70 and 80 degrees F) for three to four weeks.

    • 3

Spread the mixture over wax paper to dry. You want to make the mixture as thinly spread as possible to make it dry quicker. Monitor it regularly to ensure that no bugs or pests decide to have a bite of your mixture. Crumple up the wax paper once the mixture is dry. Be careful not to spill any of the mixture as you do so. Pour the grain-like remains of the mixture in a container and store it for later use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store the yeast mixture somewhere out of the way while it is still forming. You want to avoid moving the yeast while it is still forming.

  • When you remove your glass dish from the boiling water, set it on a flat surface and try to avoid dripping water on yourself.

  • Do not attempt to put the hot glass bowl under cold water. This may cause the glass to shatter and injure you.

  • The yeast mixture will not smell pleasant when you spread it over the wax paper to dry.
