Homecoming mums are large corsages usually given to a girl by her father or date for a high school homecoming football game or dance. Most popular in the South, homecoming mums are a tradition that can be quite expensive if purchased from a florist. Save some money by purchasing the supplies at a local craft store, and make your own homecoming mum.

Create a Homecoming Mum
Create the head of the mum first by creating a frame for the flower. Use scissors to cut the ribbon into 26 strips that are six inches long. Use an even amount of ribbon in each school color. Using two strips at a time, overlap two ribbon strips next to each other and fold to make the ends meet, creating a colorful point in your school colors. Staple the ends together. Repeat with the remaining ribbon strips.
Attach seven ribbon points around the edges of one of the backing disks like rays of sunshine. Be careful to leave some space at the bottom of the disk for attaching ribbon streamers later. Staple the ribbon points to the disk. Staple the remaining six ribbon points so that they overlap the previous ribbon points to make an inner circle. You will attach the chrysanthemum bloom later.
Cut 12 more sections of ribbon into 30-inch lengths. You can make these lengths longer or shorter depending on your tastes and the height of the wearer. Be sure to use an even amount of each school color. Using one section of ribbon, place the end in the open section of the mum head backing. Layer and fan the remaining strips of ribbon so that the colors alternate. Staple them into place. Trim the ends as desired.
Use the letter stickers to spell out either the name of the wearer or the school onto the lengths of the hanging ribbon. Decorate the ribbon lengths as desired, using charms, glitter spray and other accessories. Staple curling ribbon to the backing disk in varied lengths.
Attach the incurve chrysanthemum bloom to the center of the backing disk using a hot glue gun. Secure in place with your fingers until the glue is dry. Attach plush animals in the same way if desired.
Finish the mum by cutting a section of 1 1/2 inch ribbon into a length of 4 inches. Fold the ends onto each other and staple them to the back of the backing disk near the top, leaving the top of the ribbon loop sticking up over the top of the mum. Attach the second backing disk to the back of the first one to cover up the staples. Use the top ribbon loop to hang the mum on the clothing using a clothes pin.
