How to Delete Websites From Internet Explorer

Deleting websites from Internet Explorer history helps keep Web surfing information private. Whether it be to hide recent gift shopping from a spouse, to keep visits to video game websites secret from parents or just to add an extra level of security after checking personal information on a public computer, deleting website history is a good idea.

After you clear the website history, websites visited in the past will no longer display as list items when viewing a Web user's history or as auto-fill options when typing in a Web address.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using these delete browsing history options stops the website from being listed on the front end of a Web browser, but cookies and temporary Internet files may still be left on the computer and traceable to the website. Cookies, especially, are important to address because they can store personal information for certain websites, usually until the browser is closed. Therefore, security on public computers, such as in Internet cafes, may be compromised. The best option if deleting websites for security purposes is to take the extra step of deleting cookies and deleting files, both of which can be performed from the same "Internet Options" menu in Internet Explorer.

  • Merely clearing the history will not delete saved login details and passwords for websites if they should be visited again. To clear login details and passwords, select the option to "Delete all" in the "Browsing history" section, which includes cookies and passwords.
