How to Determine the Height of a Tower for a Windsock
Windsocks are kite-like tubes that are used to indicate the direction wind blows as well as the speed of the wind. Windsocks are most often used at airports, marinas and areas such as chemical plants, where tracking any possible gas leaks is imperative. Getting an accurate reading from a windsock requires mounting it on a mast that is in a position to capture the wind without obstruction. This is easily done with a survey of your installation area. 1
Walk the property where you will be placing the windsock mast. Masts can be attached to the top of buildings or installed directly to a tower based in the ground. Look for the highest point on the property.
-
2
Look for anything that will obstruct the windsock from capturing wind flow.

3
Measure a point at least 3 feet higher than the tallest point on the property or over any obstruction. This may be a rooftop, tall set of trees or other object (natural or man-made).

A 3-knot breeze will not fully extend the windsock, where a 15-knot wind will.
