How to Correct the Margins in Word Documents

Microsoft Word allows you to customize the appearance of your document, including the margins. Margins refer to the empty space left around the edges of a document. Certain document types require different margins. For example, some research paper formats require 1-inch margins, while others require 1.5-inch margins. Other times you may choose to change the margins for appearance or to adjust the length of your document.

Microsoft Word 2007

  • Click the "Page Layout" header at the top of the screen.

  • Click the "Margins" button from the "Page Setup" group.

  • Select the margin preset you want to use or click "Custom Margins" at the bottom of the sheet to set your own.

Microsoft Word 2003

  • Click "File" from the toolbar at the top left of the screen.

  • Click "Page Setup" from the drop-down menu that appears.

  • Enter the margins that you want to set for your document in the window that pops up and click "OK."
