How to Crochet an Antique Bedspread from Cotton
If you are comfortable with crocheting small, lacy items such as doilies or handkerchiefs, you may be ready to tackle a larger project. You can re-create the look of antique, lacy bedspreads by crocheting one of your very own out of cotton crochet thread. The project will take a good deal of time and effort, but the end result will be a stunning heirloom to keep for generations.

1
Crochet a series of small, square motifs using cotton crochet thread and a steel crochet hook. You can choose any motif you like, as long as you keep them all the same size. Once you become familiar with the pattern you choose, you should be able to do two or three of them in one hour, depending on the size and intricacy of the stitches you use.

2
Sew several motifs together to make long, vertical strips of crocheted motifs. Your strips should be as long as you want your bedspread to be, with a few inches left over for a border.

3
Sew these strips together with the crocheted motifs lined up until your bedspread reaches the desired width.

4
Attach your crochet thread to a corner with your hook, and crochet a border around the edge of the entire bedspread. This will help hold your strips together over repeated use, and add a polished look to your finished bedspread. Choose any border stitch pattern you like for the edging; try a few rounds of single crochet followed by a picot stitch (slip stitch, chain three, slip stitch all in the same single crochet stitch) for a pointed, lacy border.
