How to Give a High Top Fade
High top fades are an urban style, most popular in the late 80's and early 90's. The rap group Kid N' Play, and other rappers such as Big Daddy Kane popularized the style. Even Bart Simpson of The Simpsons has a high top fade. A high top fade typically fades from longer to shorter hair, from the top of the head to the top of the neck. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Apply the haircut on hair 3 inches or longer. Those 3 inches of hair must at least be on top; the sides can be shorter.
-
2
Use clippers to cut the hair on the sides and the rear of the head. You want the sides and rear to be no more than ½ inch long or you will defeat the entire look of the hairstyle. Use the guides on the clippers to cut the exact amount of inches you want to remove from the sides and rear.

3
Create a fade look by fading from ½ inch on the topmost area of the sides and rear to an inch down toward the neck.
-
4
Smooth the top of the hair by cutting it evenly in length and creating a flat landing on the very top.
-
5
Make sure the sides of the topmost part of the hairstyle are smooth and consistent. You can create a very straight high top fade or one that mushrooms out a bit, but it must be smooth and consistent.

If you have kinky hair, the high top fade will naturally stand straight up. If you have straighter hair, you will need to use gel to make your high top stand up straight.
