How to Make a Ring with Gauge Wire
You don't need to spend a lot of money to have stylish, trendy and eye-catching jewelry. In fact, you can make beautiful wire-wrapped rings at home easily and inexpensively. This unique ring uses a domed button as its focal bead, so you can get creative with old buttons you have at home or visit some flea markets to find antique styles.
Things You'll Need
- Wire (20-gauge)
- Wire cutters
- 1 domed button
- Ring mandrel
- Round-nose pliers
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut three feet of wire with your wire cutters.
-
2
Slide one end of the wire through one hole of your focal bead, then slide the other end of the wire back through the hole in the opposite direction. Pull both ends through until you have a loop on one side of the button about the size of a nickel.
-
-
3
Slip the loop over the ring mandrel and size it about a half-size larger than your ring size. Wrap the left-hand wire around the mandrel three times and then wrap the right-hand wire around the base of the button a few times.
-
4
Continue to wrap the mandrel and the button in the same manner until you are left with about an inch of wire on either side.
-
5
Slide the ring off the mandrel. With your pliers, wrap the remaining wire around the band of the ring on either side of the button where the button meets the band. Snip off the remaining wire with your wire cutters.
-
6
Put the ring back on the mandrel and move it around, applying pressure on all sides, until it is perfectly shaped.
