How to Make a Hamster House Out of a Coconut

Hamsters are fun pets that entertain their owners by running in their wheels and playing in their cages. Although hamsters are fairly active pets they also like to take naps and crawl into holes to hide. For this reason, every hamster cage should have a small house or structure in which the hamster can hide. One way to make a hamster house is by using a coconut. In addition to sleeping in it, the hamster can also chew on it to sharpen its teeth.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the coconut on a flat work surface covered with newspaper. Turn the coconut so that the three dark spots at the end are facing upward.

    • 2

Use a drill with a one-eighth-inch drill bit to create a hole in the center of each of the dark spots. The holes do not need to be very large, just wide enough to drain out the juice.

    • 3

Place the coconut over a sink and turn it upside down to drain out all of the juice. If desired, a container can be placed under the coconut to catch the juice for later use.

    • 4

Place the coconut back onto the newspaper with the holes facing upward.

    • 5

Use a drill with a spade bit to drill a large hole into the coconut. The spade drill bit will create a hole with a diameter of up to 2 inches. If a larger hole is desired, insert a saw hole attachment on the drill.

    • 6

Insert a spoon into the hole in the coconut and begin scraping out the white coconut flesh. Continue until all of the flesh is removed and the inside is a dark brown color.

    • 7

Allow the coconut to sit for 24 to 48 hours to dry.

    • 8

Place the coconut inside the hamster cage with the hole in a position that provides easy access for the hamster.
