How to View Movies Online Through Your TV

Television and the Internet are merging closer, and there may come a time when we receive all of our entertainment through one single box. Online movie downloads are growing increasingly common as well--with digital copies available for sale through iTunes and similar outlets--allowing people to watch online movies through their computer screens. If you wish to watch online movies through a television (which may have a bigger screen than a computer), you need to take a few extra steps. It works best when you think of the television as another version of your computer monitor.

Turn off your television and check the back of it for an input jack compatible with your computer. Most modern TVs have a number of different input jacks to fit different accessories. Look for an S-video jack, which is round with a black plastic center and a number of pinholes inside. Also check for a VGA jack, which is rectangular and has 15 pins arranged in rows of five; or a DVI jack, which is also rectangular and has 24 larger square pins arranged in rows of eight. These last two are ideal for a computer connection, but the S-video jack is more common. If you don't have any of these jacks, look for a set of RCA connectors: three small, round jacks colored yellow, white and red.

Look at the monitor jacks on your computer to see if any of them correspond to the jacks on your television. There should be at least a VGA jack and/or a DVI jack, and most modern computers have S-video jacks as well. If none of them match up to the TV, note which ones you computer does have, then purchase a crossover cable that allows you to plug one of them in to an RCA jack or other existing input jack in your television. You can find such cables at electronics stores such as Radio Shack.

Connect the computer's monitor jack to the television's input jack using the appropriate connecting cable.

Turn on the television and set it to receive signals from the computer by pushing the "Input" button on the remote until it syncs up to the proper jack. You'll know when it does so by the appearance of your computer's desktop on your television screen.

Boot up a web browser on your computer (such as Safari or Firefox), then type in the website address of the movie you wish to watch. When it appears, press the play button to start it--the exact method of doing so depends on the website you have accessed. The movie should begin playing on the television, allowing you to watch it as normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared for some variations in image quality with this operation, especially if either your television or the online movie lacks HD capacity. It will still play, but it may look a little fuzzier than you expected.

  • Make sure any online movie you view comes from a legitimate source. Pirated movies are illegal and viewing them helps perpetrate the crime.
