The Best Ways to Arrange Your Tools on Pegboard

Bryan Cohen

A pegboard is one of the simplest ways to change your garage from a pile of tools into a clean and organized place for work. There are many different accessories and hooks you can buy for the board, but you should keep in mind that more accessories do not necessarily equal more organization.

A pegboard can help you organize your tools.

Making your pegboard more organized begins with creating a plan and using available resources to get your tools in good shape.

Hang or Store

Before placing tools on your pegboard, you need to separate your tools into two piles. Place all the tools you have used in the last year in one pile and tools you have not used in the other pile. Place all of the tools you haven’t used into storage in toolboxes or drawers. By organizing your tools in this way, you can ensure that your pegboard use is efficient. Do this activity at least once a year to ensure you don’t have any wasted space on your board.

Separation

There are multiple ways that you can separate the tools on your pegboard into manageable sections. First, separate your tools into similar lengths. For example, rakes and brooms would go together while a small mallet would go with a hammer. Draw a blueprint to determine which sections will fit smaller items and which ones will fit longer tools. Place the tools on the pegboard, then use a ruler and a black marker to divide the sections up logically. By marking off the sections, you will avoid putting tools in the wrong tool section. You can also use black tape to section off the tools.

Have a System

If you do not wish to section off your pegboard using tape or a marker, you should still have a system in place. This system can be color-coded with, for example, red designating tools for inside the house and green designating tools for outside of the house or something similar. The system also could involve placing the most frequently used tools at the top while the least used are at the bottom. It does not matter what system you use, but it is important that you have a system in place or your pegboard will quickly become disorganized.

Small Touches

There are various small touches that you can make to improve your pegboard organizational system. Some users go farther in their use of markers, drawing an outline around each individual tool. This leaves no room for error, showing that there is a very specific place for the tools to go. Hammer the lid of a small jar of nails or screws to your pegboard to save space and to keep the jars out of a drawer. For tools that you use often, you can mount a small horizontal rod on the pegboard so that they can be easily pulled off and put back on.
