How to Remove Clutter & Organize a House

Some people feel that their house is cluttered because it is too small. The size of the house does not matter, however. Large and small houses can both be cluttered. With just a little work, a house can be uncluttered and organized, and stay that way. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Removing Clutter

    • 1

Go through your closets and find clothes that need to be thrown out or donated. If you haven't worn it in the last six months, you can probably get rid of it. If the item is in nice condition, donate it; if not, throw it away.

    • 2

Recycle all the old newspapers and magazines that you are holding on to. You can take them to a recycling plant if your city does not have a recycling program.

    • 3

Go through your children's toys for items that they have outgrown, broken or grown tired of. Donate or throw them away.

    • 4

Get rid off any outdated or expired food or medicine. Food can be thrown in the garbage, but the medicine needs to be disposed of properly. Check with your local pharmacy for advice.

    Organizing

    • 5

Put a basket or decorative box where you like to read books and magazines. When it gets full, recycle what you have already read.

    • 6

Use foot rests with storage space in the family room to hold toys or throw blankets.

    • 7

Hang pegboards in the tool shed or garage to hang tools and other outdoor supplies. Sporting equipment can also hang on pegboards.

    • 8

Make sure you have enough shelving and storage options for all electronics, games and music. CDs and movies can cause clutter immediately, so be sure to have enough boxes or trays to hold them all neatly.

    • 9

Store rarely used items in the attic. Christmas or other seasonal decorations, leftover paint and hand-me-down clothes will be out of the way in the attic.

    • 10

If you have children who drop backpacks by the door when they come home from school, install hooks on the wall or a bench with cubby holes. Do not ignore the everyday parts of life. Make your house work with them.

    • 11

Pick one room each day to clean. It will only take a few minutes, but you will see immediate results. Because you are cleaning each room every week, there is no major buildup that you have to tackle.

    • 12

Call an organizational expert to come into your home and help get it organized if you are still having trouble organizing the house. She will make suggestions for getting the house more streamlined and will help design a system that works best for the family.
