How to Deposit a Payroll Check

Generally, an employee is paid via a check for the services he performs for his employer. A payroll check reflects his gross pay, taxes withheld, voluntary deductions and net pay (take-home amount). While some employees may opt to cash their payroll check immediately upon receipt, others may choose to deposit the check into their bank account. Depositing a payroll check is an easy process.

Visit your personal bank and complete a deposit ticket. If you have a checkbook, it should include deposit tickets for your checking account with your name and account number. If not, the bank should have various types of deposit tickets. Choose the appropriate account for deposit (for example, your checking or savings account). Print your name, account number, date and the check amount on the deposit ticket.

Approach an available teller and endorse (sign) the back of the payroll check. Give the teller the deposit ticket and your payroll check. Check your receipt to ensure it reflects your deposit amount.

Make a drive-through deposit if you'd prefer not to go inside the bank. At the drive-through, press the "Call" button if you do not have a deposit slip. Request the appropriate deposit ticket from the teller. Press "Send" to send the container for the ticket to the teller. When she sends you the ticket, retrieve it from the container, print your name, account number, date and check amount on the ticket. Sign the back of the payroll check. Place it in the container and send it to the teller. Wait for the teller to send you the container with your receipt.

Make an ATM deposit if your bank is closed or if you'd prefer not to use the tellers. Complete the deposit ticket and endorse the check. To make the deposit, use one of the envelopes located at the ATM. Put the deposit ticket and the check in the envelope. Seal the envelope. Place your ATM card in the machine and follow the prompts to make the deposit. Take your receipt.

Note that ATM deposits often do not require you to have a deposit ticket; using your ATM card may be sufficient in identifying your account.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask the bank how long it will take for your payroll check to clear.

  • Many employers offer direct deposit, which transmits employees' paychecks straight into their bank accounts.

  • Most banks also accept endorsed checks for deposit through the mail if you are unable to visit your personal bank. Contact the bank for accurate mailing information, because the checks may be processed at a central location rather than an individual branch.
