How to Clean a Fume Hood Filter

A fume hood is necessary for ventilating smoke, heat, fumes and odors while cooking. Fume hoods come in a wide range of sizes, styles and colors to fit your specific needs. However, they must be cleaned properly for prolonged life and so that they function at top performance. Cleaning your fume hood includes cleaning the filter. Cleaning the fume hood filter can be a very dirty job, but it is also a very easy job. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Hot water
  • Oxiclean
  • Fume hood filter
  • Rubber gloves

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove your fume hood filter according to the manufacturer's directions, found in the owner's manual.

      Fill your kitchen sink with extremely hot water. Dump in a scoop of Oxiclean.

    • 3

      Put the filter in the water and let it soak for an hour. After an hour, take it out of the water and rinse it off in hot water. Let the filter dry and place it back in the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a dishwasher, you can put the filter in the dishwasher and run it in a cycle by itself. This method works extremely well. Instead of using Oxiclean, you can take a bottle of Greased Lightning and pour it over the filter, which will make the grease and dirt dissolve immediately.

  • If you use Greased Lightning, make sure that you wear rubber gloves because this product contains strong chemicals.
