How to Use a Dial Test Indicator Gauge
Dial indicator test gauges have been used in the machine shop industry for many years to test alignment and rotation measurement of machine parts. The dial indicator is still in use today, though many machinists are starting to use a laser alignment tool in its place. The dial indicator is a very precise instrument that measures distance between parts and can be used to measure distances between two or more locations. Using a dial test indicator is simple to do and can be learned by following proper guidelines.

Set the dial indicator in the appropriate spot to be measured on the part, typically in the center of the part, in line with the bed of the lathe or mill.

Mount the dial indicator to the magnetic base, turn it on and adjust the swivel arm to place the indicator point onto the part. Ensure that you have the appropriate tip on the point of the indicator. Use flat tips for measuring convex surfaced parts, a round tip to measure concave surfaces and pointed tips to measure holes.

Set the bezel to zero by turning the bezel (face of the dial) and lining up the gauge needle with the zero mark.

Tighten the screw on the top of the indicator to lock the bezel in place. Rotate the screw clockwise to tighten.

Rotate the lathe or mill jaw and count the revolutions on the dial indicator. All indicators vary slightly in units of measurement. Some may be calibrated to one mark equaling one tenth of one-1,000th of an inch. Others may be one-tenth of 2,000th inch. Adjust the measurements to continue fabricating or machining your part.
